Valley of Fire Overview

Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada in the American Southwest is near both Las Vegas & Lake Mead. It has breathtaking red, white, & pink sandstone formations with distant mountain views, spectacular hikes, a 5.5 mile one-way Scenic Road (11 miles roundtrip), 2,000 year old petroglyphs, & gorgeous scenery throughout.

The name is very fitting as the red sandstone stands out everywhere you look in this hot Mojave desert landscape. It reminds me heavily of the Colorado Plateau and the sandstone is part of the same massive set of dunes that covered much of the American Southwest.

Besides the picnic spots and the gorgeous drive, there are quite a few hikes like the 1.1 mile White Domes Loop and the Out-and-Back 1.5 mile roundtrip Fire Wave Trail. There are others as well and they’re well worth it. Just make sure you pack plenty of water.

The park is only open from sunrise to sunset and they mean it. Before sunset the park rangers will come around and blast their sirens and yell on the loud speakers that the park is about to close.

Also, there was a note that said: “Fire Wave/Seven Wonders closed from June 1-September 30 due to high temperatures resulting in heat-related illnesses and fatalities.” So… people are absolutely stupid and they don’t bring enough water and they can’t walk or are too overweight and they have to be saved or they just die. Please don’t be a statistic. BRING WATER & don’t hike if you can’t walk.

Please enjoy these two pictures of me. The first one is from April of 2011 and the second is from April of 2023… 12 years apart and not much has changed.
