Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado on the outskirts of the American Southwest is a gorgeous deep & dark canyon with breathtaking views of the Gunnison River below and the Rocky Mountains in the distance.

There are two sides, a north and a south rim and both have hikes & a fantastic scenic drive (14 miles one-way) with over 10 lookouts including the awe-inspiring Cedar Point that allows you the view of the Painted Wall with its veins of pink pegmatite that flow through the black gneiss.

There is also a campground and a nice visitor center. Just make sure you head there in the warmer months as the road can be closed with snow and ice.

None of the hikes really go to the river but they do offer gorgeous views and some of them are challenging enough with their steepness. I have done the Warner Point hike (1.5 miles roundtrip) and it was a gorgeous and well made hike with a fantastic viewpoint and relaxation point at its conclusion.

There are also plenty of rock climbing routes and boulder problems. If you arrive in the summer ready to hike and enjoy the view with your binoculars and camera, you will have an absolutely fantastic time.

The canyon was made by the powerful rocks, gravel, and sediment filled Gunnison River and its fast & violent flash floods.

It’s also one of the darkest places in the nation.
